Bob was
born January 28, 1928 in Catoosa
County and attended Keith School,
Simmons Flat
School in Chattooga
County and Waterville School
on Highway 151 in Walker
County Georgia.
He graduated from Mount Berry Schools January 22, 1946 with 22 credit units
three and one half years after entering high school; He served in the
Army Air Corps.
He enrolled at Berry
College in fall
of 1947, but left before the end of the second semester because of eye
problems. Lonnie L. Longwith, Bob’s father was knocked down and run over by a
logging team and wagon when he tried to stop a runaway team in front of his
store at Nellie Head in Catoosa County
Georgia. Bob ran the store after leaving Berry College
for about four months while his father was in the hospital then went to Cleveland, Ohio.
When the Gabriel Co. shut down due to the Ford strike he returned to Georgia and
went to Edmondson School of Business about 13 months.
He has worked in manufacturing as machinist, layout man,
welder/fitter, structural welder, experimental mechanic, and in assembly.
He had skills in a number of building trades including heavy
construction.
Since 1956 Longwith’s work experience has been primarily in professions including civil engineering, Highway engineering,
planning/codes, accounting, management, labor relations and public
relations. He was appointed to the Assembly of the Fairbanks
North Star Borough by the Assembly members. He accepted the appointment and
served about a year. Bob Longwith went to Fairbanks Alaska
in 1953. His family moved there in 1956 and did not leave Alaska even for vacation till 1966.
He is a part time farmer with experience in poultry, swine, cattle,
greenhouse crops, field crops, horticultural crops and direct marketing.
Since leaving school he has continued self-education, studying in a number
of fields including agriculture, engineering, planning/codes, publication,
management, appraising, law, and meteorology.
Bob Longwith and Frances Higdon Longwith have been married 58 years
and had two sons and five daughters, seventeen grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren. One daughter, Sharon Longwith Rockholt died when she
stopped to check on an accident.
